There are plenty of rumors or superstitions about various things you can do to help win on the video lottery machines. Starting the spins and bonuses at particular times, tapping the screens in certain ways, "It's ready to pay out", etc. Then there are the stories of apps that show when to play, or electronic scramblers that act like the modern day equivalent of the blackjacks used by criminal gangs in the days of mechanical slots. They're all bullcrap, of course. What the hand gestures and rubbing the screen and such really are is an elaborate kabuki dance us gambling addicts use to focus our endorphin rushes, keeping our eye literally on the prize. Me for instance, I like to focus my sightline on the fourth column of the slots, watching for the final bonus symbol in column 5 out of the corner of my eye. A watched slot never boils, you see.
But yesterday I saw a player who honestly opened me up to the possibility that maybe there is some sort of dev access or something you can use to trigger the big win. I was at Happy Jacks with an eye on the new machine they got in there. The Repubs might not know how to turn $600 into $2000, but I sure do. Anyway, across the room, a social distance away, this fellow is playing keno. He's playing some sort of tropical fish themed game, I'm really not watching too close. But when I hear the sound of a bonus round ending I turn and look over. 300 dollar prize, on one hundred and some free spins!!!? On a 50 cent bet even!
So now I'm paying closer attention to this guy than I am to my own game (always bad luck). The guy cashes out his ticket and when the attendent comes over he says, "It malfunctioned and cashed me out." Weird, but okay. I turn back to my game and the guy puts some money in. He spins a few times, and hits the top free spin bonus again. In keno you get 20 balls of course, and in this game you have to hit 6 red fish randomly scattered on the board for the free spins. Then it takes the guy to a picking bonus, he taps one of the symbols and it comes up 50 free spins. I look down, and not only is he still betting 50 cents, he's only got about a dollar left in the machine. This isn't from his previous prize, he must have only put in 5 or 10 bucks, and then almost immediately hit the rarest bonus a second time.
So he starts his spins and he isn't winning much and I focus back on my game for a minute. I see him win a buck, five bucks, whatever as the spins count down. But then I look over again and his total is climbing. But more importantly, he's retriggering 5 or 10 extra spins or a multiplier with every turn. 50 free spins quickly turns into a hundred, and then 2 and by the end of the rally he's earned well over 300 free spins. But what's more unusual is his hands. It's like he's typing on the screen. Every time he hits a number or a fish, he puts his finger on it in this twisting motion, and the numbers he's picked are in the bottom corner to faciliate this gesture.
He ends up hitting 200 bucks on all these spins, which is an incredible payout on 4 bits. I've burned through a hundred bucks in twenties watching this guy. Hitting a couple of little bonuses, but gambling them all back down hoping for a better pay day.
This guy spins a while more, hits one more small bonus, like 10 or 12 spins for 10 or 12 bucks, and then cashes out again. I want to wait and hop over to his machine to see what's up, but I spent all my money on the new machine that I know damn well pays poorly. (The money is in the bonuses, and the bonuses are throttled way worse than on the older version of the machine, I think.) But it was sure something to see this guy play, and yes I'll probably give that game a chance the next time I can. Gotta find out myself, you know?
