The explanation on the Sox broadcast was that apparently you now need to announce whether you are pitching from the windup or the stretch. This dude was doing some sort of hybrid and got called.
I assume Prez (or 79 LOMA) will correct me if I'm wrong.

Interesting. I was half paying attention, but I don't think they ever explained the call on the #tpt broadcast.

I heard the same, and then had to spend the next 5 minutes explaining to my kid what a balk is and why this rule even exists. I still don't think it should have been a balk, but it was a nice little sports chat and learning opportunity for him. We had a good time.

I think Greg is correct. The "hybrid" was banned from high school a few years ago and I actually hadn't heard they made any changes in MLB so I'm not sure. I didn't see anything else that would've made it a balk.
ETA: According to Google: "Lively violated what is known as the “David Price” rule, in which pitchers are required to tell the umpires if they are pitching from the windup or stretch with men on base. The Red Sox had a man at third with two outs in a scoreless game Wednesday when home plate umpire Roberto Ortiz called the balk."

I’m sorry how is that on the pitcher? If that’s a rule, then the umpire should be asking the gd pitcher, not other way around. This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

They really know how to bring in new fans to their dying sport.

It's based on how he stands on the rubber. If in the windup delivery, he has to stand facing the batter. If in the stretch delivery, he needs to stand facing 3rd base (or 1st base for lefty pitchers). The way he was he was standing (hybrid) makes it too easy for him to pitch from either delivery. The definition of a balk is an illegal move to deceive the runner(s).
