It looks to me like they fucked up. I don't understand why it was overturned.
The only explanation I can think of is that the catcher was "blocking" the plate before he had the ball or even made a move to catch the ball.
I saw something on Twitter that the explanation given to the Rangers was that the catcher was in an improper positon as the play developed. He had a foot on the plate, but it was barely on the plate, on the other side, away from the side the runner would be approaching from 3b.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. Once they go to review, it's all based on technicalities. If having his foot on the plate before making a move to catch the ball is considered a violation, then I guess they made the right call even if it is dumb.

I'm still a member of a few umpire groups on fb and they are militant about criticizing umpires, even this clown. Any comment about him sucking or video showing examples of his sucktitude gets removed and the poster gets banned.

I actually can see how he missed that call given his positioning on the play. Which I suppose was also a mistake.
His positioning was wrong and one of the basics of umpiring is to be set/still at the critical moment of the play. If your body and head are moving, shit like this happens.
