We made it. Game week! Let's break down this year's squad:
New faces:
Jack Coan, grad transfer from Wisconsin, starts the post-Ian Book era and is a one year patch until Tyler Buckner is ready to take the helm after this red shirt year. He's probably going to be a good fit because the strength of this team is going to be its defense and running game. If Coan can be one of those "game managers" who protects the football and makes a couple of throws a game, they should be fine.
Marcus Freeman - new D coordinator after Clark Lea took the head job at Vandy. Freeman is coming from Cincy where he was D coordinator there and was the hot off season hire picking ND over LSU. There are some rumors that he could be the successor to Brian Kelly. The defense has a lot of talent so we'll see how he uses it.
Old faces:
Kyle Hamilton - stud saftey, projected top 10 pick
Kyren Williams - stuff RB coming off of a 1,000 yard season
Michael Mayer - stud tight end.
Breakout candidate
Mayer would probably fit here, but he has started to get some good buzz from the national press. I'm going with WR Kevin Austin. He's been injured or suspended every year he's been at ND, but has consisitnely been talked about as their most talented wide receiver. If he can stay healthy I think he can have a season similar to Chase Claypool's senior year (66 rec. 1,037 years, 13 TDs).
Strengths/Weaknesses
The front seven and particularly the defensive line are going to be a big strength for this team. Running backs and tight end as well. The O-line is not going to be as good as last year. They have to replace three guys who were drafted to the NFL and are starting a true freshmen at left tackle. Also cornerback is a thin position and one they can get exposed at.
That 5 game stretch from late September through October is brutal. Four preseason top 15 teams with a trip to Blacksburg sandwiched right in the middle. Also all five of those teams will be coming off of a bye week. I think the spilt the Wisc./Cinny games and the USC/UNC games. 10-2 would be a very good season and may be preferable to 12-0 and blown out of a playoff game. I have a feeling there is one more loss on the schedule though, I'm thinking @ Virginia could be a sneaky loss. I'm going 9-3 overall.
Fans
Every year I try to find hot Notre Dame fans for this portion of the preview and google sends me back the same South Bend 6's year in and year out. Here is one that I haven't posted. The Tate Forcier state line tells you this was form a game in 2009, so this girl is likley approaching 40 and probably 40 pounds heavier. Its just one more area with the Fighting Irish can't compete with the SEC.
So it sounds like the LSU deal is for 7-10 years in excess of $100M. 7 years $100M is over $14M/year, can't fault him for that. It does seem like a weird fit though. An Irish/Catholic from Boston who's coached his entire career in the Midwest now goes to the Bayou at 60 years old. I guess he felt he took Notre Dame as far as he could. I do enjoy some people on twitter referring to him as Touchdown Judas.
Successors: Marcus Freeman - Defensive Coordinator Notre Dame. Your boy paje's top choice for the job. The program is on solid ground right now, they've been a top 6 program the last five years. Freeman has a ton of energy, players love him and he's shown to be a very good recruiter. Promote him to head couch, Mike Elston from D line coach to D coordinator, keep Tommy Rees as O coordinator and keep this moving. I'd be interest to see what Rees could do if he's out from BK's shadow. I think he's a creative playcaller that has been handcuffed by Kelly a bit these last two years. I honestly not even that upset about BK leaving, but if he takes Freeman, Elston and Rees with him then I'd be upset.
Luke Fickell - Head Coach Cincinnati - I'd be happy with this hire as well. Rumor is Ohio St. and ND were the two jobs he would jump at. Marcus Freeman was his D coordinator at Cinncy before going to ND, so if he could keep Freeman on staff that would be amazing (I think Freeman goes with Kelly if he isn't offered the job, but its worth noting he worked for Fickell very recently). This probably only happens if Cinncy loses Saturday and his knocked out of the playoffs. I can't see him leaving when he can coach his undefeated team in the CFP and I don't think ND can wait until January to make this hire, especially with the early signing period for recruits.
Matt Campbell - Head Coach Iowa St. - The first year his team has some expectations and he coaches a Preseason top 10 team to a 7-5 record. No thank you.
Jeff Brohm - Head Coach Purdue - Dynamic offensive mind and quality recruiter. I can talk myself into it, but for me its a step down from Freeman or Fickell.
Urb - Head Coach Jacksonville Jaguars - Not gonna happen, but I'd be into it.
At the end of the day Brian Kelly was out of leverage at Notre Dame. He was under contract until 2024 and the only thing left for him to do was win a national championship. At LSU he has a five year window, easier standards to get recruits and the ability to leverage more money if he shows progress in years 2 or 3. Stick with a 3 year window and no more money coming in, or get a 5 year window, double your salary off the bat and have a potential to get more $ down the road. It probably wasn't a difficult decision.

the thing about this that's so wild to me is it won't take much in the chip games to put ND in the playoff. UGA and Baylor win, poof, ND is the 4 seed without a coach.

Agreed. It will also be interesting to see what the committee does with this news. They don't have to worry about it tonight, because ND is pretty locked in at 6 with UGA, Bama, Mich. Cinncy, and OK st. 1-5 in some order. ND has been a spot ahead of OK St. the last few weeks but I expect them to leapfrog the Irish based on the Bedlam win regardless of the BK news. But if Bama loses close or Baylor blows the doors off OK St., would the committee slot one of those teams in over 11-1 ND since they don't have a coach?
The best scenario would be Kelly being at ND for 12 years, getting the all time wins records, restoring the program, etc. and then Marcus Freeman stepping in as interim coach, winning two CFP games and getting a statue for winning a natty.
Also - one thing I learned through all this is that I'm addicted to emergency podcasts. Everyone has the same information on what went down and everyone has the same candidate list for new coaches, but man, I see emergency podcast and I'm listening.

This is actually a really good one. It's hosted by four current Irish players and gives insight that others clearly don't have.
Stand up guy. Wonder if he killed another kid for good measure on the way out.
Seriously, the text last night saying he's leaving and oh by the way, come out at 7 am for me to repeat this info? fuck you buddy, i'm sleeping, if i'd gotten up and gone for that bullshit? Fuck this murderer. Also, find a violation or 3 and remove some of his wins, put Rockne back on top!
What's wild to me is a Notre Dame coach leaving on his own to go to LSU. But one day after the Oklahoma coach leaving to go to USC I guess anything's possible now.

With a real shot at making the playoffs!
I love Riley saying, "Oh no one from USC contacted me until Sunday morning after the loss" and he decided in like 5 hours to bolt.
