I think we're gonna see some bowl games get canceled this year because of all the transfers and opt outs. The problem is that there are still enough bowl games out there that think they'll make money even if the teams are depleted. The only way bowl games go away is if people stop paying for flights, hotel rooms, and tickets to travel. It might take a while but it's going to happen at some point.
How much of it is tickets and travel vs. TV revenue? I think some of these bowls still pull decent ratings even if the stadiums are half empty for most of them. I imagine the Holiday Bowl or whatever played on a random Tuesday night the week between Christmas and New Year's pulls substantially larger ratings number than whatever Tuesday programming ESPN or FS1 usually airs so that makes it worth it to them. I think that has a lot to do with the playoff expansion too. ESPN and Fox own this sport.
Oh, it's definitely the tv money that drives these things. People are so starved for football they'll watch anything on a random night in December. Just look at how MACtion does during the season.
But to PJ's point they're slowly killing CFB with all this nonsense. We're already seeing it with college hoops and the transfers and one-and-dones. Yet we'll all still keep watching.

but not as much... not as much....
I've watched zero seconds of college b-ball this year, missed the Big Ten/ACC challenge the last 5 or 6 years, and barely watch any regular season CBB the past few years.... makes me sad...

I scroll right past 99% of college bball on tv and, when I do stop, I only stay with it about a minute or two.

When the Big Ten season starts I may seek out an Ohio State game, or if they have a good preseason matchup.
However, the other day I noted they were playing someone and didn't turn the game on.
