Last night, we played crosstown rival who beat us 42-6 two weeks ago.
Bad field position led to a fumbled snap in the end zone and a 7-0 deficit. A second score pushed their lead to 14-0, but we answered with a drive of our own including a big conversion on 4th and 16 to make it a 14-6 contest at the break.
They came out fired up in the second half and got inside our ten, but a goal line stance kept them from scoring.
A minute into the fourth quarter, we scored to make it 14-12 on a sweet reverse from their six-yard line, taking advantage of an undisciplined defensive end who transferred out of our school two years ago. I called a bad play on the two-point conversion and we failed to tie it up.
A bit of back and forth through the rest of the game, but we couldn't get enough going to get that dub.
Still, we may have seen our turning point.

Congrats, that sounds promising as hell.
Did you purposefully target the DE because you knew he was undisciplined from having him on your team previously?

He left before I started coaching there, but yes, we purposefully targeted him because we know he lacks discipline and also because the other defensive end is a D1 kid who wrecked us the first time.

That's awesome--good to see your guys make some progress after putting in the work. I'm gonna be honest--it's impressive to read this and see the behind the scenes coaching stuff that you do to get your guys ready. Mad props.

Because our school board is even more scared than Kite's, we played two games each against the other two schools in the city (both bigger and both ahead of us in building their programs). Of course, no fans were allowed at any of our games despite there being crowds of 500 allowed by Governor Blackface Klanrobe.
But I digress.
Game One: Lost to King's Fork 42-6
Game Two: Lost to Nansemond River 52-0
Game Three: Lost to King's Fork 14-12 (trailed 14-6 at half)
Game Four: Lost to Nansemond River 34-14 (trailed 20-0 at half and pick six in final minute made score worse)
All in all, we got better, we get a lot of kids back, and our schedule is substantially easier next year. I can smell some wins.
However, the battle against a Principal who simply does not understand how to support a successful football program is monumental.
Couple one-two weeks off then back at it. My freshman qb proved to be a player on the varsity level, hope that his mom doesn't transfer him out.

Sounds like a tough season with some glimmers of hope. Good luck on the next season.
What constitutes a HS principal not understanding how to support a successful program?
Culture in school. Ex, Football players "The principal hates us".
Here is a list of things that we need to order. "We don't have money" (Meanwhile, athletic funds were used to create and hang new flags in front of the school)
Our school 10+ kids academically ineligible. Asst Principal from rival school "We moved some things around and made sure our kids got eligible."
We have tiny weight room with only two racks. HUGE storage room on other side of school sits nearly empty.
Field is becoming a sinkhole and he's done nothing about it. "I've been fighting for that for years" (Years, dude? Now you're just telling me that you're ineffective)
If you entered the school from the front door, you would never know that there is a football team, no pictures, retired jerseys, trophies, etc...
Covid guidelines were that kids were to "bring their own water to games". Knowing that is nearly impossible to do (getting them to bring it AND keeping track of whose is what on the sideline), one of our coaches spent a couple hundo getting individual water bottles. School / Principal should have been on that.
After having a toy/coat drive for the homeless, his first and only reaction was negative because we did it during Covid.
On the bright side, I just did the stats and freshman QB was 19 of 34 for 306 yards with one tud passing and one running.

Impressive numbers by the QB. He would have been top rated passer in the whatif NFL simulation.
