There should 100% be laws that put age limits on social media, AI, etc. This stuff is terrible for kids (and adults for that matter but I prefer age restrictions to bans). I know it would be harder to enforce than like, alcohol laws for example. But it needs to happen.
I understand the sentiment behind “AI is coming for our jobs,” but I just can’t get mad about it. People were up in arms about electronic tolling putting toll booth operators out of work; there was some big protest in NYC about how putting self-service buttons in elevators was gonna cut 10,000 jobs, etc. Life is objectively better because of technological advancements that at the time do have the unfortunate side effect of putting people out of work. I guess there’s a line at some point where too much automation just means there aren’t enough jobs. But I remain generally in favor of innovations that improve society. And if the next iteration of that is that the longshoremen are replaced by robots and our ports are 100x more efficient, fuck em.
right but we aren’t creating other jobs to offset the jobs we are taking away, which pushes more and more people into government handouts. You and I gain nothing from making the ports more efficient.

Unenforceable feel-good law that would only bloat govt bureaucracy. Parents need to do that monitoring.
Having said that, I'm in favor of not allowing phones in school.
Maybe all the dock workers can get those new govt gigs after we replace them with robo-cranes. Everybody wins.
I do agree it's likely enforceable, but I think it at least theoretically gives parents something to rally behind, for lack of a better term. So many parents (myself included) give in to the peer pressure of "I'm the only kid in my class without a cell phone" or whatever. Of course it still relies on parental enforcement, but I have no problem getting my kids to undesrtand that they can't have booze because it's against the law. If TikTok is illegal too, it might be easier to make the kids realize you're not just being an asshole by saying they can't have it.
Random subject that has come up recently, curious about input (sorry this has been sort of my "thing" this week but I am curious to know if I'm being a psycho)
My oldest is 12. We live in a pretty secluded nice neighborhood that has some trails and a private "playground" that is built along the trails. Said playground is very near a river as well as active train tracks.
My oldest has several classmates in our neighborhood. For sake of ease we'll say there are 4 families involved. We do not allow him to go out at "dark" to the playground unsupervised--while it is certainly dark by this point, we generally enforce this as 8 pm. 1 other family has the same policy. 2 other families give their kids carte blanche to be out until at least 10 pm.
Are we being reasonable parents or being assholes? Please bear in mind that the kids have had supper at home while watching TV. Also, my oldest has a cell phone that allows us to track his whereabouts.

Agreed. I’d be fine with letting my kid stay out till 9-10 on a weekend if it was like in the neighbor’s yard or whatever. But given the specifics of this scenario with the water and the railroad tracks and such, there’s no reason a 12 year old needs to be anywhere near there after dark.

I have to wonder: Where was the outrage from these same liberals on the fainting couches when progressive teachers unions and their Democratic supporters closed schools for over a year and a half in blue areas, denying children the right to literally show their faces in public, play on a playground, let alone get an education?
Absolute hypocritical, insane cunts.

I have a really hard time believing even you would listen to your kids complain about what they went through, and then watched as they fell behind academically just to satisfy the irrational whims of school boards and administrators.
I could be wrong though, maybe you’d blindly follow them and justify it somehow as sticking it to…..the wrong side of history? Who knows.
