Let's start our journey through the 2021 fall season by recapping the spring.
Due to covid restrictions, the three schools in our city were limited to a total of four games, two against each of the other two schools. Though many places throughout the state were allowed to compete for state championships, our school board decided that competition would be held ONLY within our city.
Game 1: Lost 42-6 to Kings Fork
Game 2: Lost 52-0 to Nansemond River
Game 3: Lost 14-12 to Kings Fork
Game 4: Lost 35-14 to Nansemond River
The important part for today's story comes from game four. During their third quarter, there was a stoppage in play due to the field condition. You see, our field seemingly sits on top of some sort of sinkhole or something because we have developed many shoddy areas.
At some point, I expect this.....
A new superintendent came in last year who was a former basketball coach, so he is very pro-athletics. One of his priorities was to upgrade our shitty facilities. The plan called for us to be the first school in the city to get field turf, both because our field was bad and because we are the black sheep of the city. Turf was seen as a way to level us with the other two schools (Nansemond River is the 'rich kid' school and Kings Fork is the crown jewel of the city. Most admins in the school system worked their way through that school so they get favored nation status).
Long story somewhat shortened, the budget was passed late and influential Kings Fork people complained, so we enter this season with no field turf. "It will be installed during the winter season."
Fast forward to this season, our third year (really 2.5). Core group of 12-15 kids have really bought-in and they work hard. Another 15-17 kids are around the program and either don't show up every day or are too young and inexperienced to help us this year. All in all, we have about 35 kids in the program. There will not be a JV team.
Scrimmage one was scheduled for Thur, Aug. 12 but a feels like temperature of 108 ending those hopes, all scrimmages for that cancelled. Ours was on the road, the other two schools were at home for theirs. Knowing it was going to be hot on Friday, city admin shut down rescheduling them for the next night. "Activities shut down until Monday"
Our scrimmage was rescheduled for Saturday morning so heat wasn't going to be a problem. Oops, Kings Fork heard that we were going to be able to scrimmage, complained because they could not, city admin disallows us from participating on Saturday.
Ok, this sucks but we'll roll with it. On to scrimmage two which we are hosting tomorrow.
Head coach wants to paint the field last night. It's been raining a bit lately.
We walk on the field last night and it is an absolute swamp, 8-10 sink holes, almost all on the sidelines. Why? Oh, because literally no one has touched the field since the sink hole problem from game four. Not. A. Single. Person.
I suggested that head coach cover his ass and send an email to AD, Principal, and downtown (school system admins) stating that field is unplayable.
If it rains today, we will cancel our scrimmage. If it does not, we will play on practice field.
I literally do not know how we will get six home games in on that field.
First real game of the year on the 27th. Stay tuned.
