This is a pretty cool idea. These people took the popular "March Madness" college basketball tournament, which is famous for its bracket that matches teams up based on their perceived ranking - or "seeding" - and pits them against each other in a single elimination tournament until a champion is crowned... and they applied it to a non-sports concept, in this case yummy wummy beer drinkies. So the idea here is that they took 32 Connecticut breweries, gave them a pre-ranking from 1 through 32 based on their own opinions of which ones were best, and then placed them in a bracket with #1 against #32, #2 against #31, and so on. Then for each matchup, they asked their readers to vote for their favorite. Whoever gets the most votes in each matchup moves on to the next round, and they repeat that process until only one remains.
Anyway, they're down to the Final Four. It's #8 Kent Falls vs. #12 Two Roads, and #2 NEBCO vs. #3 Counterweight. A few thoughts...
Fox Farm was correct as the #1 seed IMHO.
Kent Falls as an 8 seed seems way too low. I have no beef with them being in the Final 4, but it's kind of insane that they beat Fox Farm comfortably in the Elite Eight.
I think Two Roads is coasting on popularity here because they have a ton of stuff everyone has seen in stores. No beer goon worth his salt would have picked them over Beer'd in the Elite Eight, and they probably should have lost to OEC in the Sweet Sixteen tbh.
Alvarium is way underrated as a 10 seed. They should have been like the 5-6.
I don't really get NEBCO as the #2 seed, tbh. Their stuff is fine, but they have a really great reputation for some reason.
Counterweight would be my pick out of the remaining participants, but I'd be fine with Kent Falls winning.
Prez, thoughts?
Kent Falls seems to get a lot of love, but it's very pricey and I've only had a few varieties. Counterweight is a popular choice and I think a lot of that has to do with Headway being one of the better IPA's that you can get in the $10 range for a 4-pack. I haven't seen the full field of 32, but Alvarium is really high on my list. I've en joyed almost every Beer'd offering I've had and currently have a nice stout called Midnight Oil in my stock. This post really makes me want to have a beer but I've been abstaining from drinking and smoking during the week. Fuck work.
