I did not think that was a bad choice like you did 79. Hackman could be a little more sinister than his character in The Firm and I think it would work.
Uh, BD thought it was a good choice
My bad. /team dime. I swear when I first read it I thought it said he did not like the ultimate choice.
I just finished the Departed rewatchables. I wish I cared about anything as much as Bill Simmons cares about the authenticity of Boston accents in movies.
Now, I'm not gonna sit here and defend some of Simmons' idiocy but I can see where someone would have an issue with the accents in an Oscar winning movie that's based in Boston. I haven't listened to the podcast so I don't know if this is specific to this one or more of a general observation of his criticisms in other Boston based movies.
Also, who did he suggest to replace Nicholson as Frank Costello?
It's included in every discussion of every movie that references Boston in any way
Isn't it a little racist to call it Black Friday? - Joy Behar

Ok then--I retract my statement (except for Simmons being an idiot)

The biggest thing to me that is annoying is that every single time it gets brought up, the ultimate conclusion is "You know who's REALLY good at a Boston accent? The person from Boston."

Yeah. I see your initial point Flush. In a vaccum if you are discussing an oscar winniing movie set in Boston, a general discussion of the accents is acceptable. But as UEM said, he does this for every Boston movie and as dong alluded to, Matt Damon won for best Boston accent.
It was more the nuance that he went into during the discussion: "Here are the top four people who got the Boston accent wrong." "This person started with a Boston accent then gave up half way through." "This character was from Southie so it should have sounded different" Even one of the co-hosts was like yeah I don't know the Boston accent, I'm out of my element here. Kind of like, let's move on, but Simmons just kept going.
Anyway, it was pretty typical Bill Simmons stuff. Probably not even worth posting on here. I should look for a Bill Simmons message board to post these thoughts.
I didnt get to finish my thought, which is .... who would even think to recast the Departed? Is that a film that people have seen more then once? I know I havent.
Point is, this is a stupid exercise.
And why do they recast anyway? Didnt he recast American Pie with better actors that would have made it defiantly worst? Fuck Simmons and his toupee.
