Oh, there's at least three references every episode that blow right past me, almost always from Moynihan.
He's obviously studied a lot of the rise of the Third Reich and the Holocaust because he will say stuff like, "Yeah, this isn't at all reminiscent of the __________" and it's some weird moment in German history that includes some city name and a riot.
Oh yeah, they (and mostly him, probably) say a ton of shit that goes over my head. But that one term stands out as something he says repeatedly and I'm certain I've never heard anyone else use it.
This could be really interesting. I doubt I'll listen to it, but it could be.
Also, by way of background, the host of that podcast is a reformed member of the Phelps family aka the Westboro Baptist Church aka the "God Hates Fags" people.

I heard her on something once. Rogan maybe. She seems interesting.
I probably won't listen, but I like the idea. I agree it could be interesting. Also, it makes me laugh that the Free Press's website is called thefp.com. #fp
In other podcast news, I'm continuing to thoroughly enjoy The Fifth Column, and do not regret ponying up the $10 a month. I just got an email allowing me to give 3 palchums a free 1-month subscription. DM me if you're interested IYO.
Nominally, to explain how he built the Ringer. The podcast is about entrepreneurs and how they build businesses. I used to listen to it more often, but he hasn't had a lot of interesting people/businesses lately. Most of the podcast is really focused on Simmons at ESPN.
On the latest Walk-Ins Welcome with Bridget Phetasy, she interviewed a guy called Wilfred Reilly, who I'm familiar with somewhat from the internet. He's a black (I think? possible some sort of Latino?) colelge professor who writes stuff about things, and has a lot of good takes. They talked a little bit of Covid and are now onto wokeness, whatever that is. He provided the following definition, for those of you who don't know what woke is:
Wokeness is the belief that all of society is structured to oppress intentionally, and that all gaps in performance reflect this structuring, and that the solution to this vile bigotry that we’ve discovered is equity – which means proportional representation regardless of performance.

Pretty interesting conversation so far IMHO.
possible alternate thread choice: the Bridget Phetasy thread. jk, I didn't know who Wilfred Reilly was so i normally wouldn't listen to it, but it was good. also, she was on Joe Rogan's podcast this week. I obviously recommend it

Lol I forgot she had a thread. Glad you enjoyed. He seems pretty thoughtful and stuff. I’m not gonna read his books or anything, but if he writes shorter stuff I’d be interested.
I did see she was on Rogan recently. I don’t listen to a ton of him lately, but I may check it out.

I've started this. The 9 minute intro has hooked me. I think I'm in for the duration.
ETA: I knocked out the first 2 eps today. I'm enjoying it and think you definitely would too, dong. As would others among us, IMHO.
First ep kinda set the stage for the whole "lunatics on both ends of the spectrum have gotten mad at Rowling for differerent reasons" premise, and then spent most of the episode just doing background on her and how the books came to be.
Ep 2 was mostly about the religious nutjobs who think that believing in magical all-powerful fantasy beings is going to ruin their children's lives, because these are the least self aware people on the fucking planet. I had kinda forgotten how much of a moral panic there was in the 90s about goth music and movies/TV about witches and stuff, and I don't know if I even realized that Harry Potter was right at the center of all of it. I found this discussion particularly interesting and hope they cover it more in future episodes too.
They haven't even gotten into the stuff about pretending she's a transphobe yet, but it's fun to watch the idiots online who clearly haven't listened to it get mad about it when the episodes that have come out are actually focused on the stuff that these people would probably agree with (namely, that it was dumb to try to ban Harry Potter or anything else based on fundamentalist Christian beliefs).
It's pretty well-done overall IMO. The narration and production feel kinda like a Serial copycat, but not in an oft-putting way. I am enjoying, and I look forward to future episodes.

I finished this last night. 7 eps at about an hour each, and she said there will be an epilogue coming out in about a month too.
It was, as you predicted it might be, really interesting. I would say the host is definitely "on Rowling's side" but I didn't find her coverage to be biased. She's a very thorough and thoughtful interviewer, asking probing questions to really make Rowling defend her take instead of just lobbing softballs at her. And she also made sure to include the perspective of some of Rowling's critics, with an entire episode centered on her interview of 2 trans people who've been outspoken about her. One of them (a 17-year-old female to male trans) made a lot of good points about his perspective on her comments; not nearly enough to change my mind about whether or not she's a transphobe, but he was at least thougtful. The other one (a YouTube-famous male to female trans) had a decent theory about direct vs. indirect bigotry, but her application of the theory to Rowling's comments was a rambling mess that left me disliking her and thinking she's not actually paying attention to what was said and is just doing the "everyone who disagrees with me is a transhobe" thing.
The final ep - titled "What if You're Wrong?" - was particularly good, as both Rowling and Phelps-Roper were very open and honest about the way they challenge themselves and question their convictions. One nugget from that episode that really stuck with me is that Rowling said she has listened to her critics' arguments, and read books and articles by trans activists to try to understand their side and see if there's any evidence to disprove her own concerns. But despite this effort, they continue to scream, "We just want you to listen to us!" She made the point that what they really mean is "We just want you to agree with us." Which to me is probably my biggest gripe with trans activists specifically and a lot of "the left" generally. They are just so utterly consumed with blind faith that they're "on the right side of history" that they can't possibly fathom that anyone could think differently. So if you aren't aligned with them, you're dangerous/bigoted/whatever. It's so exhausting.
Anyway, twas a good pod. I think some of you would like it.
