CLEVELAND BROWNS 8.5
In January of 2021 I was as excited about the Browns and their future as I had been in a long time. They won a playoff game against the Steelers, and had the Chiefs on the ropes and should have won that game to go the AFC Chip. Less than 2 years later all of that enthusiasm is gone. The front office decided it was apparently a good idea to trade for a QB that has not played since 2020, had 24 civil sexual assault suits pending against him, give up an insane amount of draft picks including 3 first rounders to acquire him, give him the largest fully guaranteed contract in NFL history, with a suspension of unknown length facing him which turned out to be 11 games. The backup plan is Jacoby Brissett to ride out the storm and keep them close to playoff contention. Those are just football considerations and do not take into account the massive PR hit. Impossible to believe that they thought this was a good idea.
New additions: QBs Watson and Brissett, WR Amari Cooper, K Cade York
Departures: QB Baker, OBJ, Jarvis Landry, TE Austin Hooper, C J.C. Tretter
Offensive outlook: The Browns will run the ball with the deepest RB room in the league. Chubb may be the best RB in the NFL, and Kareem Hunt is still very effective. They have some young guys who are good to. As always with the Browns QB is an issue, this one a little more self-inflicted than most for them. I think Brisset is going to make people cry over Baker being gone. The WR corp does not impress beyond Cooper. Njoku, theny knows who I mean, really has to make the leap. They gave him a big contract.
Defensive outlook: If Clowney is healthy and motivated their line should be good with Garrett and whoever they plug in at the tackles. The linebackers are weak. The secondary has a ton of talent. Denzel Ward has to stay healthy.
Special teams outlook: Their kicking game has sucked ever since Phil Dawson left. They drafted a rookie out of LSU that has been impressive in camp. They let the Scottish Hammer go as punter, and the new guy has to be better. Their return game has stunk for years. Less important on kickoffs than it used to be.
Schedule:
An easy start as the NFL may have been trying to help them out with a Watson suspension looming. I say they go 4-7 with Brissett or someone else at the helm before Watson returns.
Watson returns for the 12th game in Houston. Nice, NFL. They finish 3-3 with Watson starting for a 7-10 record. Awesome job guys. Bang the UNDER
