NC State baseball catches lightning in a bottle (what kind of bottle?) in freshman phenom Tommy White this season and looks poised to build on this success next season.
Wait, what's that? BAH GOD...that's NC State Shit's music!
He'll get through this year because everyone thought it would be a rebuilding year, but Saturday's performance against Duke was godawful. They looked totally out-coached and unprepared--dumb penalties and giving up a handful of big plays to a team that only completed 4 passes. There's no excuse for that in a coach's 11th season at a school.
They brought in Brennan Armstrong from UVA (along with his OC from there--Robert Anae) thinking he would put up big numbers like he did a couple seasons ago but he was so terrible they ended up putting the QB in they were planning on redshirting this year. So the offense sucks. Defense was supposed to be the strength but they're giving up way too many big plays.
I can't see them firing Doeren because our administration is chicken shit and won't do anything (see Herb Sendek, Kevin Keatts, and Elliott Avent for further proof). By all accounts he loves living in Raleigh and coaching at NC State and I think he wants to retire here, but I could see him moving on like Sendek did--find a job at another school and get out before getting fired. I like Doeren because he 'gets' what being the coach at NC State means--it's more of a blue collar university (tech and ag) than the actual blue schools down the road--and he embraces that mentality. But at some point the results speak for themselves.
The problem is he's probably maxed out his potential at NC State. Hasn't played for an ACC championship and he focuses on recruiting 2/3 star guys instead of top talent. That's fine if you have time to build your program through development but in the age of NIL and the transfer portal he doesn't have that luxury any more. And I just don't see things turning around in the near future. I don't think we spend enough on NIL so we'll probably see some guys either transfer out after this season or de-commit (there's already one 4 star WR in next year's class who de-committed and is looking at Georgia now).
Historically NC State is a .500 program but we've wasted HOF QB talent in the last 20 years with zero conference championships to show for it.

You guys have the worst offensive coordinators. Going from Tim Beck to Robert Anae?

I'm not going to give Beck a free pass but I thought Anae had a track record of success between UVA and Syracuse and has the BYU pedigree. But either way Doeren wants to play offense a certain way (by limiting mistakes) so Bill Walsh's hologram could be our OC and we'd still suck because our OL sucks and Doeren neuters his OCs.
We had Eli Drinkwitz a few years back and that's the best offense Doeren has had in his time at State.

Anae was so bad at BYU that they didn't renew his contract. They hired him back a few years later because Bronco Mendenhall couldn't attract any good assistants.
Nice little win over Clemson even though it's not as big of a deal as it would've been in past seasons because Clemson sucks. Salty Dave Doeren is the best Dave Doeren:
