79 may be the only one with an Athletic subscription, but there is a good article about Manny being Manny in Cleveland. It is written by Zack Meisel. UEM knows who I mean.
There are a lot of familiar stories that have been often told, but there are enough new ones and insight that it makes it a fun read.
One of my favorites is that apparently my hometown police of Lakewood, Ohio repeatedly called the Indians to have them stop Manny and Omar Vizquel from speeding through their city after games. It would stop for a few days, and both of them would speed through town again.
That led to the famous Manny story where he was pulled over for speeding and received a ticket. He told the officer, "You don't give me a ticket, I can get you tickets." After the encounter he made an illegal U-turn in front of the officer and received a second ticket.
Simmons’ stats in 1977 were ridiculous: 128 tackles, 12 sacks and 13 forced fumbles. That last one is three better than the official FBS record, which dates back to 2000. And again, this was from a freshman nose guard. He earned All-America honorable mention.

Maybe bjs can dig up the archive.ph link to this, but I enjoyed it. Nice tribute to a college that is shutting down here at the end of the month, and how the Air Raid was born here.
A few days later, Mumme swung by Mount Pleasant High to talk with football coach Bob Evans and recruit a few players, including star receiver Dana Holgorsen. Evans sent a student to bring Holgorsen to his office.
“About 20 minutes goes by and Dana never shows up,” Mumme says. “Bob calls the little girl in his office. ‘Did you go get Holgorsen?’ She goes, ‘Well, I tried. But he said he’d rather stay in English class than talk to Iowa Wesleyan.’”
I am not sure I knew they had a sports section at NYT. Honestly what would it even be like? Profiles on tw*ts like Natasha Cloud and Brittney Griner and Colin K?
For anyone with an accidental Athletic subscription, this is a good read:
I recently learned that one of the dads from P2's hockey team does something like that for ESPN. I don't think he does the in-game stuff specifically, but he runs a team that's responsible for all the on-screen graphics stuff on some of their studio shows. Seems like kind of a cool job.
