Last evening I viewed the Joe List/Louis CK project "Fourth of July". I think it's kind of semi-autobiographical about List. He plays a jazz musician rather than a comic, but he's living in NYC with his wife (played by his IRL wife, Sarah Tollemache) and Louie plays his therapist who's trying to get him to discuss his family/mother issues. So he goes up to the family cabin in Maine for 4th of July week with all his drunk Masshole trash extended family, planning to confront them about how much they suck and turned him into the anxious mess that he is.
It's not a straight comedy by any means, but there are a bunch of laughs. Kind of a dark comedy, or maybe dramedy would be the right description? List is legitimately good actor, I think, which caught me off guard. Bobby Kelly and Nick DiPaolo were really good too IMO. The whole thing is kinda quirky/artsy and trying to be a FILM (both List and CK are serious film nerds), so probably not the type of thing I'd seek out if it wasn't made by people that I love. But I'm definitely glad I watched it. It was well-made, tells a pretty good story, and mixes in plenty of humor in what's supposed to be a "serious" situation.
Strong rec for 99 and probably dong; tentative rec for most everyone else. Balls would hate it, so strong rec for him too.
ETA: I see Nearl has already purchased it, but if anyone else is interested I should disclose that it's only available for a fee on louisck.com. I paid $15 for it, but I think I saw that he's currently running a deal where you can get it for $5 if you also buy his latest special for $10.
Watched Knock at the Cabin on Saturday night. Weird movie. Still a dumb title. Pretty entertaining though, anchored by Bautista, as we would all would have expected. Fairly unpredictable, moved at a nice clip, not a bad watch.
Took the kids to see Super Mario Brothers today. An absolute shit ton of Nintendo and/or Mario references, to the point that I know I didn't catch them all. Not a really funny kids movie but entertaining, looks awesome, etc. My kids, despite never really having played a ton of Mario games (or Nintendo games in general) enjoyed it.
Wolfette took the kids to Mario yesterday while I was doing yard work and said basically the same. I assume they’ll watch it 7-39 more times so I’ll get a chance to see it at some point.

I also watched Knock at the Cabin and thought that it was above meh but not wholly good. A fine effort and interesting watch.

Yeah, at least it was different. Also, shoutout to Ron Weasley, I thought he was really good.
I watched a movie called Red Rocket with former MTV VJ Simon Rex. It's from the same guy that did "The Florida Project" Just grimy as shit, but I could not look away.
I saw Air last night. It is very entertaining. Not to go all Rewatchables but the music they use in the movie is great. Really adds to the film. They also have also a lot of 80s footage. Maybe that is cooler for me given my age for nostalgia reasons. Everyone is good in it, but I am unsure about Affleck's performance. Damon, Jason Bateman and the guy who plays David Falk are great. Very well written and a lot of funny lines. The movie seems to fly by. Strong recommend.
I viewed a movie that people call "Vengeance" on Prime written by and starring Ryan from the Office.
It was dece, but it was one of those movies that comments on society and, rather than just leading it up to the viewer, there were long expositions that explained what they were trying to say about society.
I really liked this. It definitely is preachy with some of its speeches but overall it worked for me. BJ Novak works better as the lead of a movie than I would have ever guessed. The dude who plays the other main guy was really good and is apparently Boyd Holbrook, who I'm pretty sure I've heard of many times before but never actually realized who he was.
