How many ABs are lost each year by players who don't get their fair ABs in the bottom of the 9th when their team is leading? Think of the records that could fall if we started giving the home team their fair ABs in the bottom of the 9th.
These numbers mean next to nothing with such a small sample size, but the Rays are off to a pretty OK start and I suspect they might be a good baseball team.
The recent post about Bobby Bonila reminded me that he's not the only player that's still being paid by a former team years after he retired...here is a list of players still being paid in 2023 by their former teams.
Ken Griffey Jr. - $3.6m Cincinatti Reds Chris Davis - $9m Baltimore Orioles Alex Cobb - $4.5m Baltimore Orioles Darren O'Day - $1m Baltimore Orioles Manny Ramirez - $2m Boston Red Sox Dustin Pedrioia - $2m Boston Red Sox Todd Helton - $1.3m Colorado Rockies Vinny Castilla - $100k Colorado Rockies Jacob de Grom - $12m deferred from 2023 salary by New York Mets Bobby Bonilla - $1.2m New York Mets Brett Saberhagen - $250k New York Mets Matt Holiday - $1.5m St. Louis Cardinals Max Scherzer - ~$2m Washington Nationals
The Mets also paid Johan Santana until 2020
And in perhaps the biggest fleece of all time, the Braves paid Bruce Sutter until 2022, the year he died (the last payment was a lump sum of $9m...the actual value of the contract). Sutter pitched there the last 3 years of his career (85, 86, 88), made a total of 40 saves, and the Braves averaged 96 losses per year. They ended up paying him $47m for a $9m contract - $38m was interest.
