League has declining ratings and revenue, so the prudent thing to do is when the league restarts have its most recognizable players sit out:
With the Los Angeles Lakers just coming off having won the NBA championship on Oct. 11, Danny Green doesn't expect LeBron James and some of his other veteran teammates to be on the floor every night if the new season begins on Dec. 22.
"If we start in December, I think most guys [are like], 'I'm not going to be there,'" Green told The Ringer NBA Show podcast Monday. "If I had to guess, because we have a lot of vets on our team, it's not like we have a lot of young guys or rookies ... to have that quick of a restart, I wouldn't expect to see [LeBron] there. I wouldn't expect to see him probably for the first month of the season. He'll probably be working out with us ... but I just don't expect guys to want to be there, or show up willingly.

Is there even going to be an NBA (or NHL) season? I imagine most cities won't let large numbers of fans in the buildings for another year. If so, these owners won't be able to pay player salaries with minimal ticket revenue. Not sure about TV revenue for the NBA, but the NHL's is shite. I'd imagine they would have to cancel the 2020 - 2021 season.

The nba has to play for the tv money.
the nhl:
It seems very unlikely the NHL will be able to have crowds at games any time soon and I doubt they make enough TV money for the league to be feasible even if players agree to pro rata reductions in salaries.
The league said its board of governors unanimously approved the play-in tournament proposal on a one-year basis in a vote Thursday. The teams with the seventh- and eighth-highest winning percentages will have two chances to make the playoffs, while the teams with the ninth- and 10th-highest winning percentages will have one chance.
The "Seven-Eight Game" will be between the teams ranked seventh and eighth, while the "Nine-Ten Game" will feature the teams ranked ninth and 10th. The winner of the Seven-Eight Game will advance to the playoffs. The loser will host the winner of the Nine-Ten Game, as had been previously reported.
